Great Boulder Family Hike – Forsythe Canyon

On the look out for a new hike? Check out Forsythe Canyon just up Magnolia Road. Our family went there on a hike recently and it was fantastic! What we liked most about it:

  • Easy access
  • 2 miles round trip
  • Terrain is good for all ages – even the little ones!
  • Waterfall – always good to have something you are heading towards to motivate!
  • Water along the way – including pools where the water cascades over smooth rock and kids can take a dip if they want!
  • Shady – in spots
  • Fun exploring a cave and other side attractions!

Hiking and Learning and Exploring – Oh My! Natural Selections Offers Family-Friendly Hikes and Educational Opportunities!

IMG_2813Love hiking? Enjoy learning? Want to connect your kids to nature? The City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks department offers ongoing nature hikes and educational opportunities throughout the year. These are well run, engaging programs that offer something for everyone – some of their programs are even wheelchair accessible. These programs are family-friendly and so engaging for Boulder Families!

Here is a list of their upcoming August programs:

These are always free and open to the public. Sometimes you do need to make a reservation, but that is the exception. I have seen many of those programs fill up, so if you like something you see reserve it! You can subscribe to Natural Selections and receive email updates on upcoming events weekly – here. Just go to the pull down menu and select – Natural Selections – and you will be in the know!

Colorado State Parks – Fun Recreation Opportunities In Our Backyard!

IMG_1285Love getting outside with your family? Colorado State Parks offer a lot of options for outdoor recreation all year, but with summer coming up it’s a great to remind ourselves about these amazing resources right in our backyard! Think biking, hiking, fishing, camping, swimming, climbing, stargazing, creative play and so much more!

Summer is coming up! What is your family planning on those long summer days? Maybe you need a break from the routine? Make a picnic. Get your packs. Take a short hike. Take a long hike. Let your kids explore and wonder! You don’t have to make plans for the day when you go to a State Park. Just bring what you need for food, water, sun, etc. and ask a park ranger for some suggestions of where to go and what to do with your kids!

Colorado State Parks around Boulder:  My family loves these parks two parks, but there are many, many more throughout Colorado!

  • Eldorado Canyon State Park: Great hiking, picnicking, climbing and people watching. This is a real gem and super close to Boulder. It is worth a visit! They have a Junior Ranger program – check it out before going to help engage the kids! To get details on the Eldo go here.
  • Golden Gate State Park: Great hiking, biking, fishing & camping. They even have yurts & cabins they rent out. This park is really close to Boulder [maybe 20 minutes from SoBo]. Learn more about it here.

The Cost: The cost for a Colorado State Parks annual pass is $70 or a day pass at Colorado State Parks costs $7 to $9/day.

Saturday, September 29

  • Smithsonian Museum Live! FREE Day at many local museums/attractions. You do need to visit the website and download the free tickets. Here is a sample of free venues: Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls, & Toys, Denver Botanic Gardens, Boulder History Museum, and many more.
  • Saturday Storytime at the Main Boulder Library. Free. 10:15am.
  • Boulder Farmer’s Market.  8:00 to 2:00pm. 13th Street between Arapahoe & Canyon Blvd. Great opportunity for families to purchase locally grown produce, eat delicious food, listen to live music and so much more! A Boulder kids’ favorite.
  • Boulder Museum of Contemporary Arts [BMOCA] Check out Art Stop which provides FREE guided art activities for kids on Saturdays during the Farmer’s Market. I have heard that they have a space where you can throw a cup at the wall. Kids love it! 8:00am to 2:00pm. All ages
