Family Movie Nights [Not the ones in the movie theater!]

et

My family loves a good movie night! We often have a tough time finding a movie we agree upon. Recently we have tried to find some good oldies and it’s worked. The kids actually like them. And they tend to be free or cheap to watch.

home-aloneYou don’t have to pay [or pay much] to watch some wonderful movies! To get them free or almost free you have to stick to the older movies. Most kids won’t jump up and down for joy when you tell them you are going to play Princess Bride, but they usually end up loving them despite themselves. Head to the library, use Amazon Prime Instant Video [if you’ve got it already], or check your cable company’s free On Demand movie section. Babble has an interesting Top 10 List of free or almost free movies: 10 Picks for Cheap [or free!] Family Movie Nights.

In Boulder you can check out the Boulder Outdoor Cinema’s showings too. Some are better for the family than others! For 2013 it looks like Despicable Me & Princess Bride are the family-friendly winners in the line up.

You cannot always count on movie ratings, especially with older movies, to tell you all you want to know about the movie you are considering watching with your family. To check out the appropriateness of a movie you can head to Common Sense Media where you can look into the movie themes and appropriateness for your kids’ age group. This is a fantastic resource since it really is tough to know what is appropriate for your family!

Enjoy family movie night without the huge expense of taking the family to the movie theater! The oldies really are goodies when it comes to watching movies with your kids!

Family Night at the Rapids: What Made It Magical!

IMG_0827We are not a team sports family, but this past Saturday we all set off, just our family of 4, to watch the Colorado Rapids play Toronto. That’s when something magical happened. I purchased tickets last minute and we were off to do something magical. Just the 4 of us. It felt good getting in the car and heading out of Boulder. My oldest son asked if we could go to Domo before–very cute since this is not your average kid’s food [if you’ve never gone, then it is a real treat for the whole family!]–but since we weren’t heading to Downtown Denver it didn’t work out.

The Dick Sporting Goods Stadium was the perfect size. Not too big, not too small. It was IMG_0834clean and easy to find our way around. The excitement was palpable as the game was getting ready to start with all the pomp and circumstance expected. Ahhh, we found our seats and sat down. My youngest is the soccer kid, so he started out by telling us a few thing about the team and then answering my questions about why things were being done this way or that. He never gets tired of my soccer questions which is very kind of him!

We made it through the first half and it really was a beautiful game! Then half time and the need to spend money at the team store and buy really bad food: Dippin’ Dots, cotton candy, french fries, etc… But you only live once, so we got the goods. Second half. We got back to our seats and still excited we watched this tied game [0 to 0] until the moment happened. The Rapids scored. They scored! They haven’t won too many games this season [or so I gather], so we were witnessing something great. When they scored we all jumped to our feet as though we had done this all our lives. But the magic happened when I looked over at my two kids who were hugging each other and jumping up and down. Not at all self conscious. In the moment. Not wondering where their friends are. It was all worth it!

IMG_0832This may not sound like a big deal, but at 9 and 11 my kids don’t know they are lucky to have a sibling. They fight. They bicker. They are independent dudes. We all agreed this was one of the best things we have done together recently. And we will certainly do it again. What are the pieces that made this family time so magical:

  1. It was just our family: no distractions, no posturing with friends
  2. It was new and different: my youngest is the only one who has ever seen a Rapids game live.
  3. We were engaged [albeit from the sidelines] in an activity that is important to one of our family members.
  4. Our youngest felt empowered: he quickly and competently filled us in on what was happening on the field.

The Rapids offer family friendly pricing on some games. For example there are Colorado Screen Shot 2013-05-06 at 3.44.29 PMRapids Family Nights:  4 seats, 4 meals & 4 drinks for $52.80. In the end you may pay a bit more if you want better seats, but it is still a deal for a sporting event!

Kid’s Movie Review: From Up On Poppy Hill

The newest installation of brilliant anime from the Miyazaki family is finally here. From Up On Poppy Hill is written by Hayao Miyazaki, but directed by his son, Goro Miyazaki. I trust this collaboration will lead to the same quality movie as my family has grown to love. Time to rejoice because here is a great movie for your kids that and you will enjoy too! Rated PG and appropriate for age 9 and up [based on a review by Common Sense Media]. And it is playing in at Century Theaters in Boulder. Show times and tickets here.

My kids love Miyazaki movies and have seen all of them [I think]. If you are not familiar with Miyazaki movies you are missing out. They are stunning, positive, creative, magical, and beautifully done animated [anime] movies. Some our family’s favorite Miyazaki movies:

These movies appeal to kids based on the anime, content and themes. They appeal to parents because they are really positive in nature and capture the imagination of children without resorting to violence. Consider renting the older movies which I think can be shown to much younger kids [6 and up for some of them].

Does your family love Miyazaki movies? If you saw From Up On Poppy Hill, did you like it? Did your kids like it? Would you recommend it to other Boulder Families?

I want to introduce Boba. They are a local Boulder, mom-owned, company that has been helping parents connect to their babies and young children. I knew they were a great company when I met their well traveled founder in a mutual friend’s studio, where she was creating pottery on a wheel when she was approximately 10 months pregnant. She told us stories of traveling with her young children and clearly baby wearing was a passion! The Boba Family lives the life and promote baby wearing for all the great benefits it bring to families. You can find more detail on the benefits of baby wearing from Boba’s founder here.

It’s Too Hot!: What To Do With Your Family In The Heat

Here are some ideas to get you and your family out of the heat of Boulder. Sometimes in this heat our brains shut down and we cannot think of anything creative to do with the family to beat this heat–well here are some suggestions. Let us know what your favorite ways of having fun, but staying cool. We want to know!

Visit Pearl Street: Visit the pop fountain, take a ride on the TEBO train, get a coffee and/or kid friendly drink at Spruce Confection on West Pearl, where you can avoid the heat in their shady courtyard. You can also stop in to Piece, Love & Chocolate for a yummy treat.

Take a Tour: Check out the FREE Celestial Seasonings tour. They are open almost every day and you get free samples. Kids love this one! For more info click here.

Get in the Creek: We are really lucky to have Boulder Creek running through town. Don’t forget there are family friendly sites just East of the library to play in the creek. Walk up the bike path from there to watch the kayakers navigate the kayak course. Bring a picnic. Head to the library to pick up a book, look at the art exhibits, or just play in the kids’ area.

Head to Nederland: It is always cooler in the Mountains. Take a trip to Nederland where you can ride on the Carousel of Happiness, get a yummy treat such as the “famous” donuts at the Train next door. It is a beautifully restored old train with stained glass windows and wonderful details including a very extensive candy shop–the kids will really love it and you can sit down in the cafe to enjoy the treats.

Go for a Hike: Try the Anne U. White trail for a shady hike that is approximately 3 miles round trip. This is a fun and easy hike for your family and much of it is shady and wanders along a creek. For more details and directions click here.

Other ideas: Make popsicles, make slushies, make juice ice cubes, turn on the sprinkler, make a fort in the living room or outside, buy a block of ice and head to your nearest large hill and ride the block of ice down the hill, sit under a tree and sketch the coldest place on earth, etc…

This should get you started. I am personally thinking chilly thoughts for all of us at this point.

Family Travel: What I [Re]Learned On My Trip to Sayulita, Mexico

Sorry for the silence from my end this past week. I just got back from a last minute trip to Sayulita, Mexico with my kids [8 & 10] to visit a friend and her kids. My friend and I were solo for the week with both husbands traveling, so why not go? The friend I was visiting lives life fully! She is always packing in more in a morning than I get done many days. We have traveled with the kids lots, but this trip was incredibly humbling as a parent. Since many of you will be traveling this summer I want to pass along my lessons learned. Here is what I [re]learned:

1. Make sure your kids wear a rash guard/swim top if they are going to be spending the first few days submerged in the ocean and out in the sun. My 10 year old go so burnt [even though I applied sun screen–Badger–multiple, multiple times!] that he blistered, was so uncomfortable, and I believe got sunstroke and landed us in the hospital for fluids. I felt SO bad. Actually I still do. So maybe the waterproof sunscreens do have a place in our family or maybe we will just stick to the rash guard.

2. Hydrate! Ensure your kids are drinking LOTS! Honestly this is so important when you are outside all day in the sun. Somehow you have to double your water intake on a vacation! So buy the kids the cold water. Let them drink the icy limonadas.

3. Make sure you have sufficient entertainment for the kids in case of travel delays! We were delayed over 12 hours and finally ended up spending the night in Houston where I didn’t get my kids to sleep until 12:45am. Our family loves mazes, books, crossword puzzles, art supplies, and the good old iPad. Make sure they are with you, not under the plane!

4. Bring snacks–even if it’s a short flight. Our scheduled 2+ hour flight to Houston where we caught a flight to Denver turned into an over 6 hour flight as we had to circle forever, then were diverted to San Antonio where they had us on the ground for hours without food. United Airlines did not have food on the plane.

5. Throw caution to the wind and just go! We made this trip happen really last minute. It was great to just get up and go. You can do it! It makes for such great memories for the whole family. You don’t have to go to Mexico. Check out the National Parks right here in Colorado, spend the night at a cabin in the mountains, go camping, etc.

6. Get the kids involved and into the culture. I made sure the kids learned a little bit of Spanish before we left. I would practice phrases and words. They had to order their own food and ask in Spanish. They loved it! It made them feel so proud!

So along with sun burnt skin, dehydration, being stuck on a plane all day and having to spend the night in Houston, Mexico was just as I remembered. The people are so warm and friendly. They love it when you speak Spanish. The ocean is magnificent and so welcomed from a Boulder, Colorado family. The kids felt heart broken by the street dogs and wanted to take every dog without a collar home. They tried new things–and loved them [food, jumping from 30 ft. cliffs, surfing, etc.]. We felt really safe. We walked the streets at night. We met all sorts of people. We would do it again in a heart beat! I hope we make it happen sooner than last time [It’s been 10 years since I have been to Sayulita].
